Phonemic Awareness: Students should be able to hear, identify and manipulate individual sounds. Before children learn to read print they become aware of how sounds work. This skill comes before written text and alphabet knowledge. Segmentation is a word you will hear me say a lot! It is separating the sounds in a word. For example: Teacher says cat, student says /c/ /a/ /t/

Phonics: The correlation of sounds to letters. This is in written form. Students learn alphabet sounds and begin to blend sounds together to read words. This develops into more complex sound combinations. PBS.org has an article and resources about phonics development. www.pbs.org/parents/education/reading-language/reading-tips/what-is-phonics/
Sight Words: Commonly used words that are memorized by sight. Typically these words do not follow phonics rules. Students need to automatically recognize these words in print and given 3 seconds in isolation. Here is a list of our Kindergarten sight words. |
